The 8 Days, 7 Nights Kilimanjaro Trekking Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and least crowded paths to the summit. It offers trekkers breathtaking views and a variety of landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts. The extended itinerary allows for better acclimatization, improving the chances of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and crosses the stunning Shira Plateau before merging with the Machame route for the summit push, making it ideal for adventure seekers.

Arrival at the Airport

After arrival at the airport (Kilimanjaro / Arusha), your private driver guide will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation for dinner and overnight awaiting for your departure on the following day. Your safari guide will meet you at your accommodation for the briefing and equipment checkup.

Arusha - Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp

After breakfast at your hotel, embark on a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2150m). At the entrance gate, guides and porters distribute supplies and register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). Begin your 3-hour hike into the rainforest, keeping an eye out for Colobus monkeys! Lunch will be provided at the gate before continuing through undisturbed forest to the first campsite. Porters, arriving early, set up tents and boil water, while the chef prepares snacks and dinner. Be prepared for freezing temperatures at night!

Big Tree to Shira Camp1 to Shira Camp2

Exit the forest and enter a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen. Ascend through rolling hills and cross streams to reach Shira Ridge before descending to Shira 1 camp. Enjoy the amazing view of Kibo from across the plateau as you walk east towards Kibo’s glaciered peak, reaching Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream.

Shira Camp 2 - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

Continue eastward from the Shira Plateau, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. Change direction to the southeast towards the Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Descend to Barranco camp, where you’ll rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night.

Hiking time: 6-8 hours

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

After breakfast, conquer the famous Barranco Wall, using hands for better grip where necessary. Traverse along the mountain ridge and through the Karanga Valley, passing the last water spot before reaching Karanga Camp. Enjoy a well-deserved meal and rest.

Hiking time: 4 hours

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Embark on a three-hour trek to Barafu Camp, crossing through the dry alpine desert landscape. The rocky Barafu Camp offers a stunning view of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path. After an early dinner and preparation for the summit, retire for the night.

Summit Attempt, Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka

Wake up around 2300hrs for the summit climb. Ascend towards Stella Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak. Enjoy the sunrise and breathtaking views before descending to Barafu Camp. After a brief rest, descend to Mweka Hut through rock and scree paths into the moorland and forest. Dinner and washing water will be prepared at Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate

After breakfast, embark on a scenic three-hour hike back to Mweka Gate. Sign your name in the register and receive your summit certificate. Celebrate with your mountain crew before being transferred to a hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and dinner. Alternatively, transfer to Kilima2njaro International Airport for your return flight home in the even.
