Arrival at the Airport

After arrival at the airport (Kilimanjaro / Arusha), your private driver guide will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation for dinner and overnight awaiting for your departure on the following day. Your safari guide will meet you at your accommodation for the briefing and equipment checkup.

Arusha - Lemosho-gate to Big Tree Camp

Following breakfast at your hotel, embark on a two and a half-hour drive from Arusha (1400m) to Londorossi Park Gate (2150m). At the gate, your guides and porters will distribute supplies and register with the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). Your 3-hour hike into the lush rainforest begins here. Keep an eye out for Colobus monkeys! Enjoy a hot lunch at the gate before venturing into the undisturbed forest, winding your way to the first campsite. The porters will have your tent set up and water boiled upon arrival. A snack and dinner will be prepared by the chef. Be prepared for freezing temperatures at night.

Big Tree Camp to Shira Camp 1

Start the day early with breakfast before setting off towards Shira Campsite (3610m). After reaching Shira Camp, enjoy a hot lunch. The trail leads through the forest for about an hour, then gently ascends through the moorland zone for approximately two hours. Spectacular views of the Western Breach and Kibo await as you trek towards Shira Campsite.

Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2 via Cathedral Point

Today’s journey takes you across Shira Ridge, offering panoramic views of the Great Rift Valley and Mount Meru. Traverse the rocky ground and low grasses of the moorland, encountering distinctive giant lobelias along the way. A stop at Cathedral Point (3872m) aids in acclimatization before continuing to Shira Camp 2 for dinner and overnight stay.

Shira Camp 2 to Lava Tower to Moir Hut

Departing from the Shira Plateau, follow the trail eastward up a ridge towards Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth.” Descend to Moir Hut (4200m) via the same trail, passing through semi-desert terrain. Rest, enjoy dinner, and spend the night at Moir Hut.

Moir hut to Buffalo Camp

Ascend out of the Moir Valley with a moderately steep climb. Optionally, summit Little Lent Hill (4400m) for stunning views before returning to the Northern Circuit. Traverse a series of ascents and descents, arriving at Buffalo Camp on the northern slopes of Kibo. Enjoy lunch and rest before continuing the journey.

Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave

Begin the day with an ascent up Buffalo Ridge and descend to Pofu Camp for lunch. Hike eastward around the north slopes to Third Rongai Cave, with today’s ascent shorter and the group more acclimatized. Arrive at the camp in the afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Rongai Third Cave to Kibo School Hut

Embark on a steady ascent over the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. Continue southwest to Kibo School Hut, where an early dinner is served before the summit attempt. Rest well before the midnight ascent. Prepare equipment and retire early for a night’s rest.

Kibo School Hut to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

The most challenging part of the hike begins with an ascent around 2300hrs, illuminated by headlamps. Climb the scree slopes of Kibo, reaching Stella Point (5757m) on the crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m) for sunrise and panoramic views. Descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, then further to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Hiking time: 9 hours

Distance: About 19 km

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Conclude the journey with a scenic 3-hour hike back to Mweka Gate. Sign the register and receive your summit certificates. Celebrate with your crew before being transferred to a hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest or to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
