This is a simple lodge, in quite a bustling residential setting on the outskirts of Arusha. It’s not trying to be fancy, and doesn’t offer luxury, but rather simple comforts, friendly hospitality and the opportunity to relax and unwind, perhaps on arrival in northern Tanzania before you start a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb.

The lodge is set in five acres of beautiful gardens with a very large outdoor pool. Massage and reiki treatments are popular with climbers. The rooms are in rondavels (round cottages) – two rooms per building. They are simple but adequate. There are certainly better places to stay, but if you just want somewhere that’s quite reliably clean and comfy for a good price, Ilboru is a good choice.

From the elegant wooden central platform where the Lake Burunge Tented Lodge restaurant stands it’s possible to watch the lakeshore waiting for the animals that come to drink there.

You’ll find the welcoming reception area and gift shop here as well. The Rosemary Spa is located in a quiet corner of the garden and offers massage and other treatments for your relaxation. The cottages are set in lush tropical gardens and a walking path circumnavigates the extensive organic vegetable garden.

Rhino Lodge is ideally located on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater rim. The Lodge was originally the home of Ngorongoro’s first conservator, and its developers have maintained the house’s original rustic, low-impact style and natural setting. Rhino Lodge offers a perfect base from which to explore the Ngorongoro crater and its surroundings. Game drives into the crater, and, for the more adventurous, walking safaris in the forest reserve and visits to nearby Maasai villages, can all be arranged from the lodge. And, on return after a long day, 24 comfortable en suite rooms with forest views, a cozy living space, friendly local staff and generous African-inspired meals offer guests a warm welcome home.
